One of the biggest rookie mistakes new homeowners make is trying to recreate a lush Johannesburg or KZN garden on what is, in reality,  somewhat acidic beach sand with occasional clay. Not hostile but certainly... selective.  The local conditions are shaped by fynbos and strandveld ecosystems, which means sandy soils, salty winds, summer drought and winter rain.

Here, gardens don’t arrive fully formed. They sort of arrive… then negotiate their terms of existence over a few seasons.  New plots often start as blank, sandy canvases with big dreams and zero shade!  But there is hope and it's in the locals: Fynbos, restios, aloes, agapanthus and tough coastal shrubs don’t just survive here, they act like they made the rules, and settle in quietly, as if your garden was always their address. But for those who want a slightly more polished, “I do water my garden occasionally” look, Mediterranean plants like lavender, roses and fruit trees can also work beautifully, as long as the soil gets an upgrade and irrigation does the heavy lifting.

Budget-wise, starting from scratch typically ranges from about R15,000 for a simple indigenous setup to R100,000+ for a more designed landscape with irrigation, lawn and established planting. The sneaky extras are always the same culprits: soil prep, wind buffering, invasive plant removal and fencing (the quiet budget assassin).

The real Overstrand secret? Keep it simple,   keep it water-wise, get good advice and let the garden slowly decide what it wants to become!
